The appearance of the Yaghan reflects their frugal nomadic life- style. Distribution of bread by missionaries and other outsiders reduces the ever-present threat of hunger - but it also makes the Yaghans dependent on the welfare of outsiders. Polishing off a pot of soup must have been a rare treat and is obviously accomplished quickly and with joy.
